Loving the Apples

Apples are one of my favorite fruits to juice. I love this detoxifying fruit. There are so many varieties, each packed with the soluble fiber, minerals, and nutrients our bodies need.
We’ve all heard the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” There’s real truth in that—as long as you’re eating or juicing organic apples.
According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), “Diphenylamine was found on 60 percent of tests conducted by U.S. Department of Agriculture scientists of 334 raw non-organic apple samples.” This chemical is used to prevent brown or black patches from developing on apple skins during cold storage. Although the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) allows its use and claims it poses no risk to human health, European regulators did not approve the chemical. Their concerns included the lack of sufficient safety testing and the potential formation of nitrosamines—cancer-causing compounds that may result when diphenylamine interacts with nitrogen-containing compounds.

Why Organic Matters
I cannot stress enough the importance of eating organic fruits and vegetables. If buying everything organic doesn’t work for your budget, start with the Dirty Dozen list from the Environmental Working Group. It’s a simple yet powerful way to reduce your family’s exposure to toxins.
Juicing Your Apples
Never peel your apples when juicing. The skin is rich in vitamin A, vital for your skin, eyes, digestion, and immune system.
I drink organic apple juice nearly every day. It provides my immune system with what it needs to fight off infections, colds, and the flu. The mineral content in fresh raw juice also supports the health of my skin, hair, and nails.
Well—except for my nails. I’ll admit, when I’m deeply focused, I sometimes nibble on them. So please don’t judge me on my nails… we all have our quirks.
The Healing Power of Apples
Apples are rich in flavonoids and pectin, both of which:
- Reduce cholesterol
- Improve digestion
- Cleanse the colon of toxins and harmful bacteria
- Help relieve constipation naturally
According to The Encyclopedia of Healing Foods, pectin improves the intestinal muscles’ ability to push waste through the GI tract. If you suffer from constipation, apples are one of nature’s best solutions. They’re gentle, effective, and naturally nourishing.
Today, I’m enjoying a fresh raw juice made with organic collards and apples. Yum.
